It is becoming a bit of a habit, I know, but once again Gianfranco Fino’s Primitivo di Manduria Es is the highest-rated Italian wine when all of the Italian wine guides are put together: http://iwc.civiltadelbere.com/in-2014-only-one-wine-takes-it-all-a-primitivo
Just 5 years ago, it was unthinkable that a southern wine, let alone a Primitivo, would feature at the top of the guides’ ratings. The inroads that Gianfranco and his muse Simona have done into the established hierarchy is nothing short of phenomenal. Their accomplishment is a source of great pride for the South, and there is no let-up in sight. When I visited them during the summer of last year, the tweaks and experiments were continuing in full flow, and we can expect even greater things from them in future. Just wait and see.
